About Serranía de la Macarena National Natural Park

Established in 1948, Serranía de la Macarena National Natural Park encompasses over 60,000 hectares within the eastern Colombian department of Meta. The park is geographically remarkable for its isolated mountain range, the Macarena Mountains, rising sharply from the surrounding tropical plains and connecting three major ecosystems: the Andes, Amazon rainforest, and Orinoco savannas. This ecological convergence fosters extraordinary biodiversity with over 500 bird species, hundreds of plants, and numerous endemic and endangered species like the white-lipped peccary and jaguar. Visitors are enticed by natural landmarks such as the vivid Caño Cristales river, commonly called the 'River of Five Colors' due to its spectacular aquatic plants that produce vibrant reds, yellows, blues, greens, and blacks during the wet season. The park also features impressive waterfalls like Caño Canoas and Caño Soplador, ancient indigenous petroglyphs, and diverse trails that invite hiking, birdwatching, and photography. Its remote location means that access is typically via boat or 4WD vehicle, and lodging options range from rustic campgrounds to eco-lodges in nearby towns. Conservation challenges include balancing tourism with protection of sensitive ecosystems, combating illegal mining and deforestation, and preserving the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples. Serranía de la Macarena offers visitors a singular blend of adventure, natural wonder, and cultural richness in one of Colombia’s most captivating wild places.
